The Journey
Greetings and welcome! My name is Denise, owner of Hearts & Petals and this is my story…
I moved to Baker County in the fall of 2001 with my son and daughter as a single mom. My longtime family friend, who at that time owned Baker City Floral, offered me a full-time position which I accepted and started my wonderful “new start” in Baker City, Oregon.
Over the last 23 years in the County, I now call home, I have met some amazing people whom I still consider friends to this day. I have grown to love this community so much.
My floral background
1984 I attended Portland Oregon Design School. A six-week course and loved every minute of it! I graduated 2 days before Valentines Day. During these 6 weeks I lived with long time family friends in Newberg Oregon, who owned a flower shop. I worked Valentines with them and got a big eye-opening experience in the Holiday world at a flower shop- I Love it! (Still love everything about the Holidays in a flower shop.)
Personal Life
I was born in Covington, Georgia. Yes, Ya’ll I am a Georgia Peach! My family moved across the states in 1969 and bought a cattle ranch in Prairie City, Oregon. Which is where I grew up and learned the ethic of hard work to make a family business survive. Looking back at my childhood, there are so many wonderful days spent alongside my dad learning all the things about cattle. My mom taught me the gift of giving through food. I was only 11 years old and cooking for the hay crew while my mom went back to Georgia to visit family. I had 18 wonderful years of ranch life.
Through life we all have years of struggle. 2003 brought this single mom to a place where I had to give up what I loved to do at Baker City Floral, an amazing job, to find a job that would pay for my son’s health needs, as a Type 1 diabetic. I had to get insurance for him. We do what we need to do as moms. So, I left the flower shop to work at Pioneer Bank. Again, so many amazing people and I was able to get my son on an Insulin pump and had insurance for my family. But in truth, it was just God creating the next chapters in my life.
In 2006 I married my forever. We have been married 18 years! Without his love and support I would not own Hearts & Petals, LLC.
I went to work at the Sycamore Tree in 2006 with a colleague, and together we started a flower shop. Back into designing and doing what I loved…flowers!
In 2015 my husband and I purchased the Flower Shop from The Sycamore Tree, and Hearts & Petals was created.
Present day, this December will be 9 years at 1788 Main St. I have learned so much and am looking forward to all that life has for my little space, here inside these walls of my flower shop.
We are Flowers and Things from the Heart. We Run Florist Run. We put our Hearts into Petals and We love it!!
